What was Serps?
Serps was the original top-up to the basic state pension. It was designed to provide an extra income in retirement to people who had earned a decent amount during their working lives. The amount you got from a Serps pension depended mainly on the amount of National Insurance you had paid and on your earnings. Serps pensions were paid alongside the basic state pension and millions of existing claimants continue to enjoy them.
