What about the self-employed?
Serps only gave an additional pension to employees who paid a specific class of National Insurance Contributions. The self-employed, who pay different NI Contributions, did not have the chance to build up this extra pension and that hasn’t changed under S2P.
This is why self-employed people should always pay more attention to personal and stakeholder pensions and consider other investments to give them a good standard of living in retirement. Independent financial advisers should be able to give free, impartial advice on pension planning – you can find a local expert at www.unbiased.co.uk.
